(Castanea mollissima) Zone 4-8 Typically grows 40-60 ft tall with a rounded crown. Under ideal conditions, it has a slow to medium growth rate of 12 to 24 inches per year. A good well drained loam soil and thrives in full sun. They tolerate hot and humid summers well and are highly drought tolerant. Showy fragrant flowers, after pollination nuts develop with spiky burrs, usually 2-3 inches wide. Nuts ripen from mid to late September.
